    containing detailed notes on Potton Charities, compiled by the Rev. Richard Whittingham [Vicar 1806-1845] from information on tablets in the Church, in the Overseers' accounts, and from other parochial documents - some apparently no longer extant. Includes detailed abstracts and transcripts of material relating to: i) William Potter's will, 1558 ii) Benefactions towards purchasing Town Lands from John Burgoyne, Thomas Bromsall of Blunham, John Bromsall of Potton, Edmund Halfhyde of Potton, and William Spinks of Potton, draper - total £85 n.d. [c.1699] iii) Dame Constance Burgoyne's gift, 1711 iv) John Snitch's gift for poor apprentices, 1687 v) Alexander Atkinson gift for augmentation of Living, 1712 vi) Mary Tottman's gift, 1727/8 vii) James Smith's gift for the poor, 1733 viii) Henry Ward's gift for teaching children to read, 1739 ix) Robert Smith's gift for alms to poor at Christman, 1738 x) James Andrews, gent., by direction of the late Mr. John Caryer dec., gift towards establishing Charity School, 1770 [The extracts which follow are marked with numbers as above to indicate which Charities are described] Other donations [not mentioned above] occur in the text, and these include the following: 1) Gift from Mr.Worlidge, Clare Hall, Cambridge, for the poor or for the augmentation of the living, 1634. 2) John Cockayne's gift of eight acre piece, for the poor, 1666 3) Copyhold house in Church Lane used for the poor, 1693 4) Hankin's trust, 1780 5) The parish clerk's house, and fire in 1716-17, and additional land in windmill field added to property in 1774 Note.The book is not systematically arranged, and the student will find references to each Charity scattered throughout the book.(paper notebook, with paper cover showing views of "Milking the Goat", and "a Stag"published by E.Langley, 173 High St., Borough. date of compilation c.1807
