  • Scope and Content
    Whereas the Duke is seised of the manor of Clophill cum Cainhoe, and of the waste ground and warren known as Clophill warren, and of Smallman meadow (which warren and meadow are part of the demesne), and in 2 fields called Gt. and Lt. High Fields; and whereas said owners claim right of common on the warren and a right to cut and take fern, the Duke has agreed to convey to John Carter and Christopher Cole in trust as and for a common for such owners in Clophill:- A parcel of meadow in Clophill near the mill called Han Meadow, 2 ac. 30 p., in occ. Nat. Linford; adj. the river N. and the common moor of Clophill E. W., & S. A parcel of meadow called Lord Mead 7 ac., 1 r. next the common moor of Clophill called Sydell; adj. the river E. the Duke's ground W. The Duke has further promised to pay £3 a year to the churchwardens and overseers for the cottagers who used to have the right of taking fern. The surveyors and other inhabitants may take gravel at the pits and usual places on the N. side of the warren in such manner as hath been used heretofore. Witnesses James Bret, George Draper.
