- Scope and ContentReads- As Jones here oftener of late than you, have wrote him; expect you have seen my letters. I now understand he is appointed to the care of the Bedfordshire estates where he resides, & he has advised me to address you. Presume you are acquainted with opposition at next election: leaders are Bickford & Hole (who lately purchd. living), his brother the vicar, Charles Luxmoore & all the Hawkes. Hole got introduced at a freemen's society dinner & paid bill for them; Solon (?) Luxmoore called on the other society & gave stwd. 1 guinea to drink Earl Spencer's health. I wrote Jones after Hockin's death that I used to transact the borough business, & whether I should present usual compliments from His Grace - no answer. Quarter Sessions shortly - will expect usual 1 guinea to drink His Grace's health. Since writing above, these gentleman have canvassed the town for Townsend & Anderson, latter an India director, have given shoemakers orders for 1,000 pair shoes for the Indian service.
