  • Scope and Content
Under the will of Mary Baynes estates at Stagsden, Cardington, and Bedford were left to the Trustees and from the income £5 per year was to be given to the pastor of Bunyan Meeting; £5 to a pastor of another dissenting congregation 'that was poor, and Regulary Educated'; and the remainder of the income to be given to charitable uses at the discretion of the Trustees. The cash book details of rent received, taxes paid, and repairs carried out on the estates, etc., also lists of those receiving gifts from the charity, including Hannah Bunyan (John Bunyan's great grand-daughter) from 1755 until her death in 1769. Jn Costin left £200 in trust on his death in 1805 - the interest of which was to be distributed 'to the afflicted poor people of the Congregation and Church members' at the Trustees discretion. Rich Furness, a former deacon, left £150, the interest of which was to be given in 'Quartern Loaves of Bread to the Poor Weekly from May to October in every Year'. These latter two sums remained in the hands of their executor until 1815 (the interest being paid regularly by him) - the Trustees then purchased a cottage and two closes of pasture at Cople for £200 and the remaining money was used to enclose and improve their other farm at Stagsden."
