  • These deeds were found in a wooden cupboard in the parvise of Ampthill Church. Their original order was completely broken up: the present arrangement by parishes is therefore only an attempt to group them according to the properties to which they originally related. The account of the Ampthill charities, given in the Reports of the Commissioners for Inquiring concerning Charities (1815-39), pp. 139-143, enable some of the deeds to be identified with the appropriate properties, but it is not clear to which charity the Ampthill deeds (P30/25/1-15) belong. (i) Emery's Charity. - There seems little doubt that P30/25/34-57 relate to this charity. (ii) Wichalse's Charity. - Apparently only P30/25/16. (iii) Corbett's Charity. - P30/25/17. (See Vict. Co. Hist., Beds., iii, 316). (iv) Earl of Elgin's Gift. - P30/25/18. (v) Feoffee Estate. - One of the constituent properties of this estate was a moiety of a messuage in Maulden: P30/25/22-33 perhaps relate to this.
