Correspondence from Carpenter, J.H., Taviton to Daniel Beaumont, Bedford House: Reads- Cannot say whether Squire Luxmoore or Mr. Palmer managed it, but it was generally thought advisable to have it directed to the "mayor & portreeve" to make it correspond with the plans adopted by the late Duke at his first attempting thro' the late Butcher to get an interest in the borough. How portreeve alone I do not recollect.
