- Scope and ContentReads- On information from Lepipre, the Corporation are acting a very villainous part against His Grace's interest; & Backhouse cannot be at all depended upon; if therefore some very vigorous efforts are not made, Vernon may lose election. By Lord Ossory, who went hence this morn., Duke has sent word to Vernon that he thinks it will be necessary for him to come to Bedford after the Newmarket meeting & take care of his own interest; & tho' His Grace can not undertake at present to solicit single votes, yet Vernon may, if he discovers foul play, find it necessary to take such measures to secure his election. I am also to acquaint you that the dissenters appear very dissatisfied with yourself, & talk of "a snake in the grass." On the whole, things are in such confusion at Bedford, & such a head seems to be making against His Grace's interest, that he thinks it will be necessary for you to come down there again before the time you proposed when you went hence.
