- Scope and ContentFrom: Robert How, Dunstable; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford Borough Arms Dunstable “I have this morning recd the letter on the other side from Mrs Simpson. This property is let or lease I am not aquainted with the covenants. I never saw the lease I should be glad to have a line from you before I go over to look at the property.” From: Thomas Sworder, Hertford; 21 Nov 1870 To: Robert How, Dunstable “I have looked among my papers and I find no lease of the Boro. Arms but I do of the Crown, and I fancy the Crown has ascended in rank and become the Boro. Arms. I think I heard a rumour of some change of that kind. So I send by post original lease of the Crown and will thank you to see that the covenants are completely carried out as there are only two more years to run. If the repairs are not done directly, please so let me know and I will issue a writ against the parties. Is H Simpson dead – if so I shall want to see his will or letter of administration and who is Sarah W. Simpson. Lose no time in insisting on repairs being done. I am expecting your accounts to Michaelmas.” From: Sarah W. Simpson, Dunstable; To: Robert How, Dunstable “I am very sorry to say that the roofing of the stables at the Borough Arms is fell in and should be obliged if you will come over as soon as you can and see what can be done with it as it remains in a (missing text) state. I have a bad cold so I should have been over to see you about it today.”
