- Scope and ContentFrom: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford “I read your letter to Mr.Anstee and Mr.Bennett yesterday and they are not disposed to take the matter of the settlement of their claim on the Midland out of Mr.Holyoaks’ hands. Mr.Trethewey offered him £200 in August last and he then and now stands out for £300. The rent of the Rising Sun was only £20. £200 at least has been laid out since the the valuation which was £400 to make the rate sufficient for a license and Mr.Holyoaks said if he had the house to let now, he would have no difficulty in getting £40 a year for it. The amount due to Anstee & Co. at Michas is I believe correct. There was a heavy stock and £2000 odd in the Bank to set against it. Last year was not a good year, I think this will be as good notwithstanding the high price of malt. P.S I paid Mr.Mardell 3/6 last week according to your letter.”
