From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford “Messrs Anstee & Co. have left the settlement with Mr Trethewey in Mr Holyoak’s hands and he has asked £300 for their interest in the lease. Messrs Anstee & Co. will not consent to receive less and so there is no chance of settlement without going to arbitration. If you let me know what you can offer out of the £900 for the lease I will lay it before Messrs Anstee & Co. on Monday. I shall be able to let you have £50 the first week in April. I send you account, but Mr Bennett has not yet made it right, as you will find an error of £304.8.9. The Board of Health are going to build a plait market as well as corn and vegetable market and the ratepayers have given them leave to spend £15,000, the Board only asking the modest sum of £11,000. I have mentioned to the Board about the old Brewery for a plait market but I expect they will keep as near to George Street as possible. They have the offer of an acre and ¼ of old Mr.Williamson’s garden for £1750 and 100 ? in Cheapside near the new Methodist chapel for £1700. The majority are in favour of the latter and rather think as it is so close to the present market.”
