- Scope and ContentFrom: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford “I only got Mr.Cowell’s letter on my return from Caddington on Saturday afternoon. I think you will be in time with Mr.Primrose as I doubt Mr.Cowell had been asked by Mr.Primrose to find him a Brewer. I have heard since I wrote from another source that Mr.Primrose is a highly respectable man but he has got wrong with his beer. Anstee & Co. have no objection to the King’s Arms being given up on the tenant being fairly compensated. You ought to stipulate that the King’s Arms be disused as a public house, say from Michas next, otherwise it won’t benefit your other houses. If that is done away with there will still be 8 public houses immediately round the clump of buildings proposed to be pulled down.” From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; 5 Dec 1866 To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford “I only got Mr.Cowell’s letter on my return from Caddington on Saturday afternoon.
