From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford “I was in hope of being able to send you £100 today but I can only send £50 and will send another £50 shortly. Messrs Anstee & Co. will pay you interest on the overdue rent from Michas till it is paid. Messrs Burr & Crabb were here last Friday and spoke to me about a proposed new road to go through the Chequers public House and garden. I told them if they would forward me with a plan I would forward it to you. I now enclose plan and think that the proposed exchange would be of benefit to you as the present Chequers is a very poor place and although there is a good yard and premises there is no way for a cart to get in. The two cottages they propose giving up are in bad repaire and it would cost £100 besides the materials of the old Chequers to convert them and put them in good order. Messrs Burr & Crabb also mentioned about the road through the old Brewery but at present they are not in possession of the adjoining house and garden so nothing can be done as to this yet.” From: Thomas Sworder, Hertford; To: Robert How “Please consider the enclosed well and write to me.
