  • Scope and Content
From: William Medland, Dunstable; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I am very much obliged to you for thinking so much about me altho far from feeling well I certainly look much better and my business is improving. I have struggled through so far thank God and altho I have a long ride to get up, yet I have faith I shall see the top of it, but the dreadful anxiety I find tells sadly upon me at times. With regard to Elizabeth having heard of my affairs that I put down at the Smithemans' door. I may be mistaken altho I don't think I am far out, as when Tom's affair was about he came over like a Bull dog to know how we stood and I told him I should not satisfy his curiosity, as I could not see what he had to do with my private affairs. At any rate, I know you would help me if possible and I feel your Kindness as much as if you had, but I know you cannot. I went to Cambridge on Tuesday for the day and met Tom, Benson said I must have some change from business and as there was some shooting going on I thought I would avail myself of a cheap ride with the chance of bringing a prize home but the Train would not allow me to stay long enough to shoot out. I wish I could sell my annuity. Yesterday I received a card in memory of Hyde's death of Cambridge and I wrote off at once to Sumpter to know if he thought of taking another Partner, he must have sent the card, so I will let you know the result. I could do well at Cambridge. I have got our Charter Gazetted & it comes on again on the 19th. I am pretty certain to get it and that will improve my business. Baby [probably Frederic Hamilton Medland] gets such a dear little fellow you will hardly know him. "P.S. Quelch tells me that my House in St.Andrew's Street is in bad repair, what is to be done in the matter, as my mother ought not to allow it to go to ruin in this way. I should like your advice".
