  • Scope and Content
From: Charles Stockdale Benning, Dunstable; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "Will you meet at Luton on Monday afternoon and arrange with the Bank how their account is to be settled. I send you on the other side copy letter from Mr.Bigg" From: William Bigg, London & County Bank, Luton; 25 Sep 1862 To: Charles Stockdale Benning "As the time is so nearly approaching which the Guarantors in the matter of Mr.Sworder's proposed composition have announced for tendering payment of the same I think it may be well for me to inform you that the Bank has not yet had any communication from Mr.T.Sworder of Hertford to show in what way to proposes to deal with these matters which if not satisfactorily arranged will prevent our aceding to the composition offer". From: Thomas Sworder, Hertford; 27 Sep 1862 To: Charles Stockdale Benning "I have been expecting for a long time some account or Communication from the Bank but they did not send any. I was in hopes they did not mean to call upon me for anything & it was not till yesterday that I saw a copy of a letter from Mr.Bigg to Mr.Everett of Luton on the subject. As Mr.Hawks has acted for me in the matter I think I had better not enter into any arrangement without first consulting him & he will not be at home till 6 or 7 Oct but if you & Mr.Bigg will talk the matter over with Mr.Everett it will be as well & perhaps prepare myself & Mr.Hawks for an early arrangement. I do not yet know the value of the securities held by the Bank nor why a Note of £1,200 shd be charged against my Nephew's account & so make me worse off. I wrote to my Nephew about this. Nor can I complete my Proof & settle my Divd until I know the amt due to me & Burr & Crabb for rent unpaid by my Nephew so please send me that account as that must be added to my account sent in o nwhich I was to take my Dividend. It is of no use my going to Luton on Monday under these circumstances".
