- Scope and ContentFrom: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: R.Shafto Hawks, Rotherhithe "The meeting yesterday was not a very satisfactory one, one of the parties (guarantors) evidently wishing to throw up the affair. The meeting is adjourned till Monday next when they will give a decided answer whether they abide by & carry out the arrangement or not. They want to know by Monday whether my Uncle will grant them a Lease of the houses in which he is interested leaving out all private houses & also the old Brewery of Burr's & such public houses as he intends to put up for sale. I told them it would be the better way to have a rent put upon the houses by some competent valuer, but they wish to take it at a rental not exceeding 5 per ct on the value of the property as taken for the purpose of the statement laid before the creditors. I will write to you if I think it necessary for you to come down on Monday but whether or not I should be glad to hear what you would advise my uncle to do as regards letting the property. I hope to hear a satisfactory account of your visit to Royston".
