  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I return you Drafts & send my remarks in a separate piece of paper inclosed. As I find it impossible just now to pay the Int due to Messrs & & Crabb I asked H.Vyse whether he could let me have some money as what with the great increase of private trade, the heavy price of malt & hops & having to find money to carry on the Dowlais Brewery. I find the capital in the Business insufficient to carry it on with any spirit or comfort. he said he would willingly have assisted me but he just now wanted all he could get together in consequence of American affairs & he expected every day to be drawn upon for £15,000 from that Quarter. He then asked me about security & I told him how I was situated with you. He then asked me how much I wanted & I said £5,000 would be none too much as then I should be able to pay up promptly. he said he would become security for £2,500 if you would do the same & on that being carried out you were to draw up an agreement charging any money that might be coming to me under the wills of Mr.Vyse Senr. & Junr. With this help I might open an account with a London Bank & as my private accounts came in after Xmas I might pay off a considerable amount at the London & County & thus save a heavy rate of Interest. I have had a party about the Dowlais Brewery but I am afraid there is no chance of getting rid of it until trade there (the Iron trade) is better & the new malt & hops are on the market"
