  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, 4 New Steine, Brighton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "We have just arrived here & find Lucy much better than when we saw her in London I saw Benning yesterday & he informed me you had fixed Monday the 16th for the settlement. I cannot yet get a bid for the malt & it will be impossible to deliver it & get the money by the day named. Randalls, the factors, could do nothing with it now & recommend me keeping it till Michas so I sent a sample to Messrs Nixon & Co & their letter I enclose you [see X95/291/246]. I went on Mark Lane as I came thro London today & there was nothing doing except in very fine malt. Under these circumstances would it not be better to get the money of William Medland's client for a time until the malt can be realized. It could be then returned to him or applied towards the payment of Mary Ann's legacy. Next month when the Railway is open to the Gt Northern the carriage will be 1/- per Qr lower which will come to £20 on 400 qrs. I shall be here till Wednesday morning so till then a letter wd find me here. I much regret it has so happened but I could not realize except at a sacrifice of more than £100. Mrs.Vyse wanted to know when Charles was going home. She had heard nothing of him when we left this morning".
