  • Scope and Content
From: William Medland, Dunstable; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "Many thanks for your kind invitation to dine with you next week but I am sorry I shall not be able to get over to you so soon as next week for I must be in London on Tuesday and I expect my Cousin Emily Robinson on Saturday and when she leaves us I am to take her to Pa's & Ma's which she appears to reckon of with great delight. One bed would have done for myself & dear old woman certainly however if you had provided two I should have soon made one of them. I am sorry to say she is very sadly today and we don't know how matters will end at present, which is a great trouble and disappointment to her, poor dear, she feels very sadly indeed today but I trust it may all go well yet with her. I am so sorry to hear the account of your dear wife & chicks. I was so in hopes the former was getting better. Influenza has been very bad here poor Ally & Charley have had a sad time of it. Our letters must have crossed as I wrote to you the other evening to give me a character and I enclose you one I have received relative to Mr.Scargill which reads well. Yes Cooke has set up but paid me £250 before doing so and I go over to Luton as usual and practice again there next January what I get in Luton now I am to take to him. I thought I had better make sure I am tired of managing clerks they are enough to drive one mad at times. Scargill is to give me £1,300 premium and £200 he is to pay towards working expenses. He is a good looking little fellow I think the Girls will soon be after him. We have a grand day here all the Volunteers are to be sworn in and the Band has just arrived. Mr.Macnamara is Captain and I am Lieutenant. Macnamara will come into a large estate here at the death of his mother and I think he will be a good Client so I must keep in with him and use my Rifle for some good purpose".
