  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Broadstairs; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I shall not be able to leave here till next week as my little Charlotte is ill with gastric fever & the doctor says we must not think of moving her this week. I have had a letter from the Dr I consulted in London & he says he shall be here either as today Tuesday or Wednesday if he comes I shall have had both Luton & London Drs down without special retainers. I am very glad he is coming. I began to feel I was getting no benefit from Sea bathing but today I feel as well after bathing as I could wish to do, quite inner glow all the Evg. Perhaps as we stay till next week you can come down for 2 or 3 days you can very easily do so by Eastern Counties to Tilbury & from there by boat. I have no objection whatever as far as I am concerned to Robert returning to Luton, but I should object to him as a partner. He might greatly assist me in making malt, buying Barley &c. He thinks of coming up after 1st Oct. I am sorry he & John do not get on better. I am afraid however John is too proud to ask Robert anything or consult with him. He wrote to ask me about his leaving for the wedding and I wrote twice to say he must arrange with Robert he wrote again the third time & said as Robert was gone out he must trouble me again, so I gave him the same answer as before & told him being here I could not arrange with him when he was to leave as if he were away, Robert ought to be cognizant of it so that he might be about during his absence. I don’t want you to mention this to John but I heard from parties in London that John was only on the look out for something & he intended leaving. I am afraid to say he is too knowing for himself & does not know when he is well off. If you have an opportunity in giving him some good advice it would perhaps do some good. Uncle Smitheman have him a rare scolding some time back for staying away so long. Robert did not know then when he intended returning. Ellen joins me in kind love to aunt. I will see what the rest say about your suggestion as to Uncle John. I should be glad to see anything in any form further".
