From: Thomas Sworder, 12 Royal Crescent, Ramsgate; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I am surprised to hear Benning has been over to you. I have been expecting to hear from him every day whether anything was arranged to pay the £5,000 the Executors required & thought perhaps he deferred writing as he knew I left home from ill health. I am pleased to say I have derived much benefit from the change & that my weak part my throat is now much more comfortable. I went to the same Dr. in London (Mr.Bell) that Benning & his wife have been to, & he said I must leave home for a time now, otherwise I may have to leave for a warmer climate altogether if I do not get my throat better before another winter. I am sorry you think I have led you into a scrape about Burr's, you will however perhaps recollect that you said previous to the purchase that you would not mind selling or mortgaging your Berden property & invest it in the Luton Brewery in order to bring in more Interest for your money & that afterwards you wished me to look out for a partner to join me as you thought the responsibility too great. For my part I really cannot see any reason why you should think worse of the concern than you did last year. There is no doubt whatsoever about the badness of the time for Brewers, the state of the money market &c. since the purchase and that I have had uphill work to contend with in consequence, but now I hope brighter times are coming. I can quite sympathize with you in your feelings about the large capital at stake, but I think you need have no fear, but that you will have value for money as I am quite satisfied that property will increase much in value in Luton, more especially when we get the Railway opened to Welwyn. Mr.Benning told me that if £5,000 was paid the exors would allow the remainder to be left until some of the property was sols, but that they would not convey any property until they had received £5,000. We can arrange about the auctioneers when you come to Luton. I should like to see Mr.Moss' letter to you. I have had a letter from John to say he has written to Rawes. Mr.Moss, the Valuer, has been advertizing it again, but at present I have not heard with any result. I had a letter from E.D.Rayment about Throcking. He wanted to know the reserve. I referred him to you. It will hardly be worth while to sell it just at present as I think we should do better by putting it up again by Auctn at Buntingford. My wife & three of the children have just joined me & Caroline is also staying with us. The Medlands, who are quite well, leave on Saturday. Warm baths have had quite an invigorating effect on me. I should have thought they would have acted just the reverse".
