- Scope and ContentFrom: John Sworder, Dowlais; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I was rather surprised at the receipt of your note urging a renewal of the negotiations respecting R.Rawes & myself taking this place. From the tenor of R.Rawes's letters to me (after the price Tom offered this Brewery at) I anticipate he will be somewhat reluctant in having anything further to do about it but I intend writing to him today and will let you know the result. I feel certain that he will object to take it at a valuation as that would be attended with expense and as Mr.Ryme came down here on his behalf he is quite satisfied with his opinion and I apprehend the only way for Tom to get rid of it is to have it valued and (provided R.Rawes will entertain the matter) to give us the lowest price. As regards good-will I think Tom is quite mistaken for the Trade is not so extensive as it was and the prospects in the Iron Trade are anything but good. Besides the management exhibited here has not tended to enhance the Brewery but quite the contrary. I think I am in the best position to judge but you may fancy my opinion is biased or not worth much but I can tell you that it is backed by an experienced man and I do not think the business worth so much now as it was when they took it and viewing it in the most advantageous light, at any rate, not worth more. Robert told me yesterday that Tom's throat was worse which I very much regret and that he had gone to Ramsgate for change of air. I am much obliged by your evident interest in my behalf and also in Frank's & hoping to hear again soon & that all your circle are well I hope to be up in Sept and if anything is done it had better be arranged before then".
