- Scope and ContentFrom: William Medland, Dunstable; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "Benning returned home yesterday and he has been with me today and I told him the purport of your note. I am sorry to say that he states that they really must have the £5,000 immediately as Mr.Burr is threatened with proceedings by one or two parties who he promised payment last Lady-day and that it is not a matter of choice with him. He particularly requested me to state to you that it is only the £5,000 they require and the balance he will be able to arrange about. So now can it be managed? You saw Grover's letter to me. Can I do anything in that quarter for you? But I dare say you have better means of getting the money than I have but my anxiety respecting the matter makes me think of all kinds of contrivances. Tom has not yet heard from C.Young's friend I wish he would write. You will write me perhaps in the course of a few days what to state to Benning. he appears anxious to get over to you, but I think it would only worry you for no purpose. Once this £5,000 is paid I don't see that you will have any more bother about the matter. I am delighted to find that the Boys and Fanny are coming tomorrow and I only regret their Pa & Ma cannot accompany them. I congratulate you both most sincerely upon Tom's success, he will be all right I am sure and I am very pleased indeed to find that he has met with such a handsome reward. We are all very busy at Dunstable today preparing for Friday. I trust it will be fine".
