- Scope and ContentFrom: William Medland, Dunstable; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "Burr's Brewery Benning spoke to me about this matter the other day knowing me to be a friend of yours and Tom's, stating that Burr had written to him to press Tom for £5,000 immediately as the executors require that amount forthwith. I told him then that I was using my utmost endeavours to procure him a partner to which he said very well. I will write and tell Burr and I have no doubt he will wait to see the result of your communication the enclosed is the result I regret to say. Now the question is what is to be done. £5,000 they want immediately. Tom has endeavoured in every way to procure a partner but cannot, at present altho I do not think for one moment but what he will in a short time, that however is not the question. There is this request to meet, can I do anything through Grover is it [?] for you & Tom to sell any of the property would not do besides it would appear so strange to sell their property to pay them what is due or rather the amount they now require. Surely if you set about it you can get enough to satisfy the executors as from Mr.Burr's note he clearly looks upon you as having as much interest in it as Tom. Matters now having come to a stand I trust every endeavour will be made to meet the executors' wishes or I am fearful they will proceed against Tom to fulfil his contract. I write this as Benning has been to me upon the subject and I have satisfied him up to the present by telling him of my endeavours to get Tom a partner, but from the enclosed I cannot tell what to say to him now, at any rate something must be done & that soon. You have heard of the Hertford folks being with me I suppose but they were ill nearly all the time and the Govr went to the Four Swans again for change of air. Hope you got Tommy home again, if not let him come to us on the 9th we have got a large dinner coming off in the Park. I don't see what you can do better than run over with your good wife & some of the chicks and talk the Brewery business over. The garden is looking lovely and it will do you all a world of good. Alick wants to see the little Boy very much".
