  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Hertford; To: Thomas Sworder, Luton "I shd ask Mr.Leigh £10,500 the amt of Cumberland's valuation because if I recollect right Mr.Leigh sd it was worth about that sum & 2ndly because if Cumberland valued it at that sum you can well state that it was so valued by a competent valuer & probably it may in some manner be referred to Cumberland & if so I presume he cannot value it less than he has already stated. If however Mr.Leigh will not give £10,500 then take a little less. I presume he wd pay the money down. I presume you include the whole property malting house &c in the £10,500. If you are sure the Tolls wd bring in £400 pr £500 per an then I think you need not fear taking all the Brewery premises (including malting) & the Tolls or a lease at £500 per an but are you so sure? I wd rather that you had nothing to do with the Tolls as you have now enough & more than enough on your hands. At the same time I think it very advisable to get rid of the Brewery premises & even if you had a loss, it had (perhaps) better be a small annual one than a large one in Capital at the present time. I think therefore on the whole that if you are satisfied that you will not lose any thing or much by taking a lease you had better do so - if you can sell the premises at a good price to Mr.Leigh & get the money paid down I am afraid I cannot find £5,000 by 1st May. I don't know where to get it, if you can agree with Mr.Leigh (before 1st May) it will be good excuse to Messrs Burr. I think if you had enacted yourself a little more and a little earlier you might have got rid of that Confounded Welch Brewery before this. There is your Capital that you so much want & you ought to get it away. Since writing this, this question has occurred to me. Will Mr.Leigh give £10,000 for the Brewery &c & then let that & the Tolls to you for £500 per an. if so, what rent does he get for the Tolls? I fear there is some misunderstanding here".
