  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I am sorry to hear you have been kept in again. I have been anxious to get a party to take the "Fox" off my hands & hope I shall be able to write you in a few days that I have succeeded, in which case it would be a relief to me as well as yourself and perhaps you could then do without the £300 a little longer. I thought I should have had no difficulty in meeting that after the redirection in my account but nothing seems to satisfy the cormorants now & I really don't feel comfortably in drawing a cheque. Young Rawes is going down to Wales next week & if he likes the concern he will at once fork out £4,000 so I hope to goodness he will take a fancy to it as that will give me a great lift and put my mind I hope at ease. I have had a sharp time to fight thro having been stormed from so many quarters. It will teach me a lesson which I shall not soon forget. Do you think of coming over next week? I expect Messrs Burr & Crabb will be over. I am afraid they won't get the £10,000 they want they ought to think themselves lucky inasmuch as they got rid of the concern just before the crisis in the money market. I can take some malt of Mason if you wish it but you had better purchase or get Uncle John to purchase for you sufficient at first say 20 qrs to set you square. I would give it a trial at your expense if you would rather it should do so. 65/- at 3 or 4 months would not be dear if of good quality. I shall want to buy 1,500 qrs on 2 or 3 months time, I would buy now if I had money to spare as it is so much better to have malt made in season. I had to pay this week for the piece of land behind Brewery £220. Lord Bute's agent said he could not wait any longer".
