  • Scope and Content
From: William Medland, Dunstable; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "We were exceedingly sorry to find by your letter of Tuesday that you have been so poorly. We had no idea of your being an invalid and trust by this time you have quite recovered. I was very sorry also to find that you were annoyed about Tom's request. How he came to get the £1,500 thro' me was in this way. I had a Client who wished to get that amount out and knowing Tom wished to get his account reduced at the bank I thought I should not only be doing great things for him but you also, as I had understood you had made yourself responsible for £2,000 but I was not aware under what terms, and I thought as more than £1,000 of the £1,500 would go to lessen Tom's account at the Bank it would at the same time be putting you in a better position which was my sole reason for offering the money to Tom so that when I found out you were displeased about the matter (not without some cause I must confess as Tom ought to have told you when he saw you at Hertford about what he was going to do this week) I felt extremely annoyed to think I had put myself forward in getting the money for him. I expect next week I shall have to go down to Brighton to examine a witness if so I shall give Fanny a call. I thought Tom had gone back to School a long time since and we were talking of having him over but I suppose it will not do at present. I am thankful to tell you my dear wife keeps pretty well altho she does not look very grand and our dear Boys are first rate. Do you hear anything like an opposition getting up for Hertfordshire? I suppose you will soon have one. I enclose you receipts for Insurance, I find I returned myself in my proposal older than I really was and the office are going to return me the difference upon my mother making a declaration as to when I was born as by the Certificate of Baptism I am 32 last January and by my proposal they tell me I must be 34 as I wrote up about Insuring my life for another £1,000".
