  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Hertford; To: Thomas Sworder, Luton "I am rather annoyed at being requested to give up my claim on any Deeds in ths hands of the London & County Bank at Luton & I do not quite understand why you are driven to borrow £1,500 thro' W.Medland. I understood from you only a few days ago that you were going on more comfortably & you had the dame day £600 from Morland & Godfrey which I ought to have recd but but which I let you receive. I have your cheque for £300 lying useless in my drawer. I had to borrow £1,000 of the Unity Bk a few months ago because you wanted my ready Money to redeem some Mtge which (or nearly all) is still due to the Unity & I have just got my Banker's Book & find that in consequence of the £1,400 you borrowed of the Unity on my joint responsibility I am charged with that £1,400 and consequently I am in a deficiency at my Bankers £1,195.13.5 besides owing £800 to £1,000 to the same Bank on my Note to let you have £850. I cannot go on so. It humiliates & pains me. I really have not paid all my Xmas Bills because you have made me so short. I must have your cheque for £300 paid at once. You do not even tell me how this £1,500 is to be applied & why did you not mention it the o'r day when you came here. If I am to assist you I must be told everything fully & confidenly. I cannot bear half confidence. The Unity Bk is just going to be transferred to Sharples & Co & therefore I shd if possible have liked that neither you nor I shd be in Debt to the Bk when the transfer is made. I beg attention to my letter. I have signed the request but against my inclination. I see your request is dated 3 Feby long before I saw you last".
