  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Hertford; To: Thomas Sworder, Luton "I am glad that Robert is not your Partner & I hope you will take great care in looking after him. You do not tell me how much Capital the Dowlais Brewery requires but as far as my notions go it is too small to have 7 partners & therefore not a case for limited Liability. I think with you that £1,500 only is a very small sum to put in such a concern but that depends on the total Capital. Ought you not now to be receiving considerable remittances from Dowlais? I fear you have got too much on your hands & that you cannot check the accts & study the ledger sufficiently to keep down the large Balances. Pray do attend to this. I hope you may get rid of Burr's Brewery for a Market. I think you shd turn everything into money you possibly can & as for Medcalf I shd not employ him to sell any par'lar property for which I decidedly thought another person better qualified. Perhaps the 1st week in Jany is rather too early. The Xmas Holy days have hardly got over by that time. the 3rd wd I shd think be better. I am glad to see that Malt is lower. Those who bought heavily at the beginning of the Season will suffer a good deal. What do you say to advertizing for 2 Partners - one for your Brewery & one for Dowlais with reference to Mason & Street, who wd refer them to you or me or say Trinder & Eyre. I do not understand the question betn you & your Bror John sufficiently to give any Opinion but I suppose you owe John a good deal of money & if so you must not be surprized at his not going on increasing his Debt. You must rely more on yourself & keep down the Balances owing to you. Keep at the Ledger. You have not returned me that Draft security. Have you spoken to your wife about it? I hope you are better. Take good care of yourself. Do what the Doctor orders you. I think I shall be at Westmill on Thursday (tomorrow) I want Copy Medcalf's Valuation!!!"
