  • Scope and Content
From: John Sworder, Dowlais Brewery; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "In my last I think I promised to write again as soon as Tom had returned to Luton but I have delayed (wishing to give you an account of what took place while he was here and also his intentions respecting this business) being unable to state anything definite. A Mr.Loveridge who has lately married wishes to join Tom in this concern and the latter is quite willing provided they can agree consequently Tom arranged with Loveridge that the latter was to write stating his wishes &c. He has not replied to Loveridge's note and yesterday I went to Merthyr to hear whether a letter had arrived but as usual was disappointed. Loveridge objects to enter partnership with Robert at which I do not wonder for I myself am quite tired of his conduct. He is more reserved I think than ever and if asked a question which sometimes I am obliged to do his answer generally is I don't know. The inducement Tom held out to me when I came down or rather before I came here otherwise I should not have come, was that I should have a share. That it has increased (I am happy to say) is undoubtedly the case and now I look to Tom to carry out his engagement. If a partnership is formed Tom wishes me to join it and if you and Uncle Smitheman think fit to assist me I shall be very happy and obliged to receive it. I certainly think this a genuine and profitable business otherwise I would not have preferred the above request. I shall be glad to hear what your ideas are. I am rather afraid Robert will be somewhat tiresome to deal with but I expect Tom has settled with him".
