- Scope and ContentFrom: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To; Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I have written to Benning to ask him whether Tuesday or Wednesday next week will suit him. We have a Railway amalgamation meeting in London on Tuesday, which I ought to attend, but will put off going if you think it desirable. I should be back in the Evening. Money has not come in quick enough to enable me to meet John's Bill, I have no doubt I could have borrowed what I required in ordinary times for a temporary purpose but now things are different & if I don't have the whole of the money in hand Bigg won't give me any latitude, besides he has the impression that at Hertford the bank have better security with John's name as well as my own. Now to shew you the difference it makes to me in John's not conting malting as usual last year he advanced me as follows for barley & duty. 1st Oct 500.0.0 3 Nov 935 22 Nov 520 5 Dec 621 This has been totally witheld this year i.e. from 1 Oct & I have since 1 Oct paid altogether £1,200 to parties who had lent me different sums & who of course required it all at once. John says he wants to pay George & Charles what money he owes them & for this reason he has been the last 5 or 6 months passing quite a suicidal policy because as you must well know it is impossible for me to pay out of the regular course unless I could have met with a partner or else got some one to have stood in John's shoes as regards the malting. I have been suffering from throat affection [sic] & I am now ordered to keep in doors but if well enough on Saturday I shall probably be over".
