    From: John Sworder, Dowlais Brewery; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I received your note of the 5th Inst on Saturday morning and I believe Robert sent Tom a check [sic] the same afternoon. I was rather surprised at hearing from you after so long a silence and especially regarding money affairs as I have had nothing to do with paying into or receiving cash from the Bank and Robert takes good care to say little about anything to me about it or scarcely anything else. I expect Tom will be down here tomorrow and that then we shall be able to make some arrangement of this business. Robert is so very reserved and taciturn that it is next to impossible that we can agree together long and besides he is every now [and] then interfering wither with the Brewery or the men which Tom gave me to understand should or would not be the case. Tom is desirous that I should have a share here and it was the inducement held out to me to come down here otherwise I should most likely have gone into Kent. I wish you to understand that it is neither my wish nor intention to hamper Tom in any way whatsoever but at the same time I only hope he will fulfil his agreement with me which was that I should have wholesale management here and nothing whatever to do with Robert. When I began brewing here he Tom wished me to let Robert have the management of the cash account to which I agreed directly not wishing to inconvenience Tom but I think it now high time for the case to be otherwise as my present position is not at all an enviable one. However I will write to you again after I have seen Tom. Trade has been slack here for the last week or so, but hope it will revive after the "Reduction in Wages" takes place of which there is notice at all the works here. In answer to your enquiries as to the "paying" of this concern I can only say (not knowing all particulars) that I consider it very good and have no doubt but that with good management it will answer very well. Hoping you will receive this in the sense I mention with respect to Tom".
