  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Retford; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I return you Biscoe's letter. I think you had better write & ask John whether he wishes to purchase the Farm & if so, what he will give for it. George says he should be glad to have it if some one would be kind enough to make him a present of it, but if he had the money he should not like to give £6,000. It is certainly of no use to keep it, as there is a sacrifice of interest annually. If you wrote to John it would be as well also to ask him whether he will purchase the Aspeden [sic] land in order to avoid a public sale which he seems not to approve of. Mr.Bigg has had a letter from the Bank to say they will not consent to my offer to pay off £600 a month & that they require £2,000 or £3,000 to be paid off this month & if this is done the remainder may be paid off by degrees. If you could devise any means to get £2,000 & lend it to Charles on Security of his share in my Father's property it would stop up the gap without increasing my responsibility to you & it would enable Charles to commence malting on a small scale this year & to be extended next year if thought advisable. I find it rather sharp work to get malt just now & Luton is badly situated for getting a supply as the Land carriage is heavy. I made the suggestion as to you lending Charles the money in a letter I wrote to you last week & which letter you had not received when I was at Hertford. I had about 80 to dinner on Thursday & all were very pleased - took £450 - which stopped up a gap. £30 only of this sum paid by 2 of Burr's tenants. Perhaps you can come over next week for a day or so. George is going on very well - he has had fresh splints on today, which make his leg rather more uncomfortable. He is much obliged to you for your kind letter received today & hopes before long to thank you in person. Ellen & Arthur came down with me this evg & we leave at 6 on Monday mg as I want to get to Luton early".
