  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Bedford Road Brewery, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "On my return home I found that there was an opposition for Beds Col.J.Higgins on the Liberal & Captn Stuart, the rejected of Bedford on the Conservative Side, so today I have been busy canvassing the Electors here, the other side were in the field first & got hold of all the lawyers in the place except self & Hunt. Hunt was bribed to go over to them or at all events they tried it on. I saw Mr.Burr again this morning & I think he is disposed to take the Valuation of Cumberland as the Sale price which is not much above Medcalf's but Mr.Burr has left in this way, he will agree for a 3rd man to be called in to say which valuation is nearest the mark & whether he considers anything ought to be allowed for goodwill independent of whichever Valuation he might adopt. If you could manage to come over on Saturday I should be very glad to see you, to talk over the affair. Mr.Burr says the trade is now increased to 120 barr's per Wk".
