- Scope and ContentFrom: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I made no doubt you would be surprised at the contents of my last letter. A Brewery business like most others is very well if you have plenty of capital to work it but that is unfortunately not my case since I had to cash up for the Welch affair and consequently the responsibility of working the monies of other parties sometimes depresses my spirits & then a letter like the one I received from you the other day makes me feel for the time as though I would rather get the weight off my shoulders altogether. The fact is our business has increased faster than our Capital which you can judge pretty well for yourself is the case when I tell you that the first year we sent out about 600 Barrels & this year upwards of 6,000 besides which we have added the Spirit Business which also requires capital altho nothing very considerable. I have not yet ascertained anything about the horses at present but if I should not hear in the course of a short time I will tax Rob't with it. For my own part I cannot say but that I have confidence in Rob't but if he continues to mix himself up with racing society there is no telling what might happen to him. I have not heard anything of Mr.Burr's desire to give up his Business of late but when I saw him last about 2 months ago he said he did not care at all about business as everything was so dear. There is no doubt our Brewery joined to Mr.Burr's would make a capital concern & should I hear that he wishes to get rid of it I will at once let you know. I am much obliged by your suggestion as to the deed of partnership which I shall see about at once as it is no doubt important to have one, if only as a check. If there was a chance of getting Mr.Burr's Brewery I should like to get it before we get a Railway here as that would no doubt much enhance the value of it. Business has been rather dull the last month in consequence of the straw trade being dull & the high price of provisions. This however is always a dull time at Luton".
