- Scope and ContentFrom: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "It is true that we only gave about £3,500 for Gray's Brewery but since then we have built a house and enlarged the Brewery - besides which we have put up Machinery which has cost at least £1,000. We moreover purchased the property when property here was at its lowest ebb & since then the value of it has been considerably enhanced in consequence of the large increase of business. The property in mortgage to Mr.Lettsom is worth now considerably more than when we bought it having laid out upon it in repairs and improvements at least £800. I mentioned these circumstances to you before on your making the same objection to the security & I then thought you were satisfied with it. I may not at present be able to send more deeds as since Mr.Lettsom's mortgage was settled I have not had any more property conveyed. Mr.Bennett has had about all the money coming to him but there are several small mortgages to be paid off. I intend giving the parties notice to pay off the mortgages at once & if possible come to a final settlement with Mr.Bennett. The conveyance to Everett was from Mr.Anstee as Mtgee under a power of sale we were made parties to the conveyance in consequence of Everett's Solr being doubtful whether the property purchased by him might not be held to be included in our conveyance from Gray".
