  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I send you the following Deeds which have been handed to us as the largest purchasers of Gray's property & relate to the Brewery Estate [see X95/246]. 17 July 1844 Release from Marq's of Bute to Mr.John Gray 3 Oct 1844 Release from same to same 15 Mar 1847 Mortgage from John Gray to Mr.Thomas Hurry Riches I wrote to you sometime since about selling the Volunteer & cottage adjoining at High Town Luton. I have agreed to sell the same to Mr.Pledge for £280. As the Beershop will be rendered useless to us after the present tenant leaves without a large outlay to make it if sufficient rateable value I thought it was best to dispose of it especially as we made no sacrifice I send you Conveyance of a piece of ground adjoining the Brewery for which we gave £200 & on which we are about erecting some buildings necessary for the trade. I thought perhaps you would have no objection to substitute the latter as a security instead of the Volunteer on our paying you £90 which will leave exactly £5,000 due to you. If you have no objection to this I should be glad if you would let Robert have the Deeds relating to the Volunteer when he will give you a cheque for £90 as Mr.Pledge wishes to settle next Friday. I have seen nothing of the Hertfordshire candidates at present".
