- Scope and ContentFrom: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I send you abstract of title to the public & other premises at Silsoe ,which I mentioned to you some little time back when you said you could find the money. I have seen the premises & think that £250 the sum required may be advanced with Safety - as we have to make an allowance in the Beer sold we will pay the interest. I send you Mr.Greene's letter by which you will see that proceedings have been taken by the Mortgagee. If there should be any objection to the title it had better be made to Mr.Greene direct. Do you think I had better go & examine the deeds now, or wait until the Settlement? Another Publican asked yesterday whether he could advance £350 on some houses & land at Caddington, to pay off the present Mortgagees as they were in want of the money. If you should have a Client willing to advance that sum I should be glad to know, so that I may give him an answer. I will go & see the property on hearing from you. We have got another customer at Hexton, a tenant of Madame Lautour's. Lucas of Hitchin has served the house for 35 years but in consequence of a dispute between them & the beer being not very good, he has left. It is a good house for business. We are also about supplying the Houses with Spirits. Some of the Publicans say that their Spirits cost them more than the beer. We have decided upon this rather promptly in consequence of hearing that Mr.Burr intended shortly to supply his houses by beginning first we thought perhaps they would not do it. W.Medland comes home next Thursday by his account he is quite a happy man. he will now want half a score children to make him happier still. With kind love to all hoping Aunt & the little one are quite well".
