  • Title
Report of Charles Brittain Labourer of Haynes who worked for Squire Whitbread of Southill. He had been directed to look after Ivy Cottage, belonging to Squire Whitbread in the parish of Old Warden, near the main road leading from Bedford to Shefford. His Uncle had been living in the cottage and had left Brittain several things. Brittain was to have the cottage once it had been 'done up'. He went with Joseph Clark, Labourer of Haynes, to the cottage and heard persons inside. The back door was still locked but a pane of glass had been removed from the back window. When he entered he found 3 men in the front room. They had a fire in the grate. They said they'd come to cook some food. Brittain told them to go with him to Mr Billingham or he would call the Police. Clark stayed to lock the house and Brittain left with the 3 men. As they passed Deadman's Cross the 'sailor looking one' took a pistol from his pocket and fired it in front of Brittain. Brittain let them go and went across the Warren to Shefford and gave information to Sergeant Daniels. The men were apprehended. They were Henry Plummer, William Walters and James Hopkins.
