- Scope and ContentFrom: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "We received your Letter this morning enclosing Cheque on Adams & Co for £1,000, for which you have our best thanks. I enclose you prom. note payable on demand for the amount. Monday next is the day now fixed for the Settlement of Gray's purchase. I shall be glad to get out of his clutches as he is a disagreeable fellow to have anything to do with. W.Medland has just called here on his way to Dunstable half frozen he seems mightily pleased with his £10 Hyde gave him. I understand Mr.& Mrs.Medland were offended as I did not call on them on Wednesday. Mr.M. asked Prite [?] whether I was offended because he did not patronize our beer. I had no time to call scarcely, it was late before I got here as it was. Mr.Burgess has hired a house in London & talks of leaving next Wednesday for good. I saw your letter to him offering to subscribe to his work. It is to be dedicated to the Marchioness of Bute who has taken 8 copies".
