  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "I was surprised yesterday on receiving a Letter from the Manager of the Bank here requesting to know what amount of accommodation I required & for how long as it was needful for him to make a special application to the Directors for all large advances. The reason for his writing was in consequence of my overdrawing to pay for all the hops, Malt &c which we have bought thinking that the £5,000 was paid in to our a/c instead of which I find it was only £500; perhaps there is some mistake if so perhaps you will let me know how it stands directly, as I am paying interest on £800 or more on an overdrawn account which is as well to be avoided if possible. You no doubt received my letter acknowledging the receipt of £5,000, the mistake as to my thinking £5,000 was paid in is accounted for by Mr.Bigg telling me that the money that is, the money I had been enquiring about some days previous, had been put in and as someone was in the Bank at the time I said is it 5 meaning £5,000 & Mr.Bigg replied yes. I suppose by the time you receive this you will all have returned home from Brighton, I trust all the better for the Visit, as soon as you can find the time I shall be most happy to see you Aunt & Children over here where you will find some pure air if not sea air. I went over to see how Mr.Bennett was going on on Saturday, he had not then seen his Solr but said he should do so today. He asked me wh'r I would give up the concern, but I of course said, no. After all the trouble & expense I had gone to I think there is not much doubt that I have fixed him by accepting his offer. On looking into the matter I can find no decision to the contrary. I shall see him again tomorrow & it is no tat all unlikely that I may take the Brewery from Mich'as in which case he must give up, it will be of some service inasmuch as it will perhaps keep out all opposition".
