  • Scope and Content
From: Thomas Sworder, Luton; To: Thomas Sworder, Hertford "Grays purchase was settled yesterday I am happy to say. It is nearly 8 months since the Sale so it is time it was settled. I told Mr.Anstee that I could get £1,700 for him at 5 per cent on mortgage of his Farm, but he does not seem willing to give 5 per cent for the money if he is put to the expence [sic] of the mortgage. I suppose a Deposit of the Deeds would not be sufficient for you - he is a safe man according to all accounts. He promised to let me know in a day or two whether he would have the money, he thinks he can do better elsewhere. Tomorrow I have to go to Bedford Sessions for receiving stolen goods. I have never been there. I had much rather it had been in the Summer. Last Ev'g Robert , Mr.Medland & myself went to Vyses to dinner, rather a [unreadable word] turnout altogether. His dining room is a large & splendid room. The decorations I have heard cost £500 & the drawing room in comparison is very small indeed. After tea we danced for some time & then sat down to cards until the New Year came in when after a few songs we left at 1 o'C. There is very little in the party way going in here. The Valuation of the Vats &c came to £378 which was £78 more than Medcalf's Valuation so there was not much gained for us by a reference. With kind love to all wishing you all a happy New Year & many of them. PS I hope you received the pm note safe"
