to Robert Butcher
Letter from Becuda, Bedford House
Reads- Am forwarding your letters to Mrs. Butcher, Mr. Butcher, Mr. Duane, -Reverend Walton & Mr. Ward. I sent this morning by the Bath coach the commissions for Devon militia officers. Mr. Butcher came to town Saturday and has been paying the Duke of Marlborough's creditors today. On account of a misunderstanding between Vintoer and the people of the inn, I could not get the books to Beds. till this morning. Mr. Moore has separately seen Mr. Franks & Mr. Pearse about the stable at Woburn Abbey and about building on His Grace's estate in town and writes to you today. Each, if he builds the stables, will build a couple of houses of 400-500 each. I saw Forbes, (agent to the Duke of Newcastle as Lord Lieut. of Middlesex) who is not going to deliver out militia commissions until the act is reconsidered by the House. Captain Hallett told me Saturday that he intends to put Captain Barker in the house & rope-walk, late Batts; and Captain Barker said same; he is the one recommended by Mr. Davis as a good tenant; has lately quitted seafaring. Hallett purposes to have the 2 fields under separate agreement. Upon observing your queries on Mr. Garfield's and Mr. Timsdar's (?) receipts, Mr. Rogers told me money had been paid to each by the Duke of Marlborough himself; their debts now stand at 50 and 100 respectively. Ther name of the coachman by whom I sent the commissions this morning is Clarke; St. Christopher's inn, Market Place, Bath. I have wrote to Mr. Bullock about the doe.
