Weather hot and sultry slight rain towards evening 2-8-15 Battalion marches to VAL DES MAISONS with Brigade to be inspected by GOC 3rd Army at 2.30pm. Heavy rain on the way there and back. GOC expressed his entire satisfaction at the Brigade's turn out 3-8-15 Battalion route march TALMAS-VILLERS [BOCAGE]-TALMAS. Conference at HQ of Batt at 6pm. Weather wet 4-8-15 Musketry "rapid fire and loading" by companies in valley SW of TALMAS. Bombing practice for all bombers. Machine Guns inspected at Bde HQ NAOURS at 2.30pm 5-8-15 Bombing Parade and Coy parades in the morning demonstration in smoke helmets and respiration men made to pass through room full of chlorine gas. Weather wet and showery 6-8-15 Weather too wet for battalion route march. Conference of officers at 9.30am. Company route marches in the afternoon. Brigade conference at Middlesex HQ in the afternoon 7-8-15 Very wet day. Battalion at musketry in the morning TALMAS 8-8-15 4pm Battalion marched with Brigade to LA NEUVILLE. Passed LA NEUVILLE starting point at 4.15. Arrived LA NEUVILLE at 10pm where Battalion billeted. Weather very hot and the march very trying. B Coy detached from Batt at MOLLIENS-AU-BOIS to act as rearguard. This coy arrived at midnight LA NEUVILLE 9-8-15 9am Orderly Room 9am. Morning spent in cleaning and settling into billets 10-8-15 Parade for NCOs under Adjutant at 7am. Route march for Battalion 9.30am WERRIEUX [QUERRIEU?]-DAOURS-LA NEUVILLE weather hot and sultry. Lecture to officers and NCOs by Bombay[lacuna] 11-8-15 Musketry for all coys. Parade for Rt batt at [lacuna] conference at 6pm 12-8-15 9am Route march LA NEUVILLE-LA HOUSSOYE-LA NEUVILLE [lacuna] NCOs at 7am under Sgt Major. Lecture [lacuna] for all trained bomb throwers 13-8-15 Headquarters visited Amiens to visit French [lacuna] GOC Brig and Div and Gen.Morland [lacuna] methods of French confluage [camouflage?] 14-8-15 9.30am Route march R batt. 5 miles forced march time taken 1hr 16 mins 2.10am Route march L batt 5 miles forced march time taken 1hr 12 mins packs behind. The left half batt perhaps started too soon after dinner and consequently lost 13 men 15-8-15 Church parade at 10.30am in the Middlesex area cancelled owing to rain. Holy Communion at 7am 16-8-15 Rapid marching to LA HOUSSOYE by companies in morning. Musketry under Company arrangements in the afternoon. 50 reinforcements arrived from Base Camp at taples 17-8-15 Parades under company arrangements 18-8-15 Musketry in morning. Route march in afternoon DAOURS-PONT NOYELLES 19-8-15 Digging in morning. Musketry in afternoon. Weather showers 20-8-15 Rapid marching in morning. Bombing. Bayonet fighting. Lecture to all Subalterns by Adjutant in evening. Conference for all officers at 5pm. Weather fine 21-8-15 Parades under company arrangements 22-8-15 Batt moves to RIBEMONT by route vide attached table of march [not attached] 23-8-15 9am Col, Adj and officers of A & B Coys proceeded to trenches under guidance of Bde Major 154th Bde for preliminary view of trenches 6pm A & B Coys, Col and Adj proceed to trenches for instruction. A Coy attached to 8 A&S High, "B" to 5th Seaforths. Vide attached scheme [not provided] 24-8-15 9am Training carried out under Company arrangements 3pm Control Post furnished by Battalion at cross roads near SUCRERIE 25-8-15 9am Training carried out under Company arrangements. D Coy route march. Owing to absence of Adjutant in trenches the following entries were not made under his return 10am All last night enemy shelled our trenches but inflicted little damage. Sap at 475 was [overwritten on original and impossible to decipher] 26-8-15 Organised [overwritten on original and impossible to decipher] in order to try and dislodge [unclear] of the enemy who was damaging our line. Last night quieter than the 25th 6pm C & D Coys left for trenches to undergo instruction. C Coy relieved A Coy and D Coy relieved B Coy. The Col and Adjutant were relieved by Major Mills the 2nd in command. The Col & Adjutant visited 8 East Surrey regiment during day to arrange movements for relief of that batt by the 7th Beds one slight casualty in the morning in A Coy 8pm Reliefs completed only one casualty in B Coy 27-8-15 Last night reported quiet by C Coy following report was sent 12MN to HQ by C Coy attached Appendix (4) [not attached] A & B Coys spent today in cleaning up kit etc. 28-8-15 Parade for A & B at 7am in arm drill, Draft of 20 men posted to Battalion on arrival 29-8-15 Situation unchanged. Church parade in morning 30-8-15 A & B Companies proceeded to trenches to undergo company instruction as such. They relieved C & D companies without casualties arriving at RIBEMONT at 4am on 31st 31-8-15 Day spent in cleaning up. A & B companies returned to RIBEMONT at 11.30pm. Showery
