    Jas. Caldwell, Sidmouth, Devon to Lord Grantham Friend of 1st Baron Grantham in Vienna, knew present Baron Grantham then as ten year old boy, wrote to him subsequently when sent with Gen. O'Donnel to serve with the Austrian army in Italy. Wishes now to resume correspondence after break of 30 years. Letter from Sir Wm. Montgomery in Ireland a fine army of 14,000, and a larger number of "self-created", if invasion will vie with each other to do most service. "The grant from this kingdom to our distracted County [Devon] of 500,000 to defray the expense of encampment and military preparations is very generous but it [is] at the same time plain by Proofs the necessity there is to unfetter our trade so as to supply our own wants". Says encloses copy of a "Letter to a Friend relative to the reports and conjectures on this part of the Coast". Actually four enclosures:
