He is impressed with St. Petersburg, and has found the inhabitants curious about English culture and customs. Mentions Mrs Carew has an eye infection and comments, in reply to her previous questions, "No, I think our Uncle did not die rich in proportion to his rather bravado talking of the fortune he could leave his granddaughters".
