- TitleMary, Newby Hall to Amabel, Wrest Park Provides extracts from Tom's letter from St. Petersburg. Describes his journey from Berlin, to St. Petersburg, stopping at Danzig, Konisberg, Memel, Riga and Narva. The section between Berlin and Memel was arduous; "But from the bareness of the place, the poor Horses are very sparingly fed and were so weak that we were obliged to walk near 12 miles to lighten the Carriage. Add to this the comfort of this walking up to our Ancles in sand, our provisions exhausted and the water so salt or brackish we could not drink it". Includes a description of Memel, and the search made of their luggage at the border with Courland, mentioning that their books were taken, and returned to them at Riga. In Livonia they were forced to pay double price for their horses, and on their arrival in Narva they found their rooms dirty, infested with fleas and sparsely furnished. Mentions their plans to visit Harewood and Thoresby, and attending the monthly assembly and ball at Ripon.
