  • Title
Bill for £149.16.0. from John Millington, civil engineer. Detailed bill mainly regarding the erection of a tread mill at the new house of correction. Millington visited various prisons, including cold Bath Fields (mill not yet begun), Clerkenwell new prison (no mill), Aylesbury "12 men work at once on inside of wheel 22 feet diameter they walk in two ranks of 6 each, the Mill supplies the Town with water, and not being highly approved it was in contemplation to alter it so that the men walk on the outside of the wheel 1 day...", Hertford and Bury St Edmunds. Interesting detail as to transport to and from these places. Bill also details planning meetings regarding the placement of the mill at the house of correction, drawing the plans, attending to mark out the foundations, to see 'the long girders got up' and to see the stones set. Other business includes work relating to bridges at: Langford, Tempsford, Stafford and Washbrook Bridge Biggleswade.
