  • Title
    Grantham, St. James's to Fitzherbert, Paris (No 16, draft) Mr Tor, who has been dispatched by the Dutch Plenipotentiaries in order to confer upon Terms of Peace, has arrived. Grantham assured him that the Republic could not expect any deviation from the proposal given by Fitzherbert through M. de Vergennes. Grantham told Tor that the States General would not be allowed to obstruct the "important work so happily begun". Court of Versailles will not allow Dutch to "trifle with so serious a concern". Encloses an answer to Messrs Berkenrode and Brantsen (not present). Fitzherbert to send a copy of it "which you have signed for a suspension of hostilities with Holland". Fitzherbert to obtain the English duplicate of the American Declaration which Messrs. Adams and Franklin signed.
