  • Title
Grantham, St. James's to Fitzherbert, Paris (No 7, copy) If France keeps Tobago it must be added in the Preliminaries to the 7th Article. If otherwise it will, with the other West Indian islands, stand part of the article which stipulates the restitutions to Great Britain. Same applicable to St. Vincents. Trusts French will consent to 16th Article relative to Hyder Ali otherwise war may continue in India. Has been suggested that an article in which the contracting parties would invite their allies, viz the Indian princes to accede to the Treaty and expect them to retire to their own territory would be sufficient especially if accompanied by Memorials from France and Great Britain. Should not be resorted to "but in the utmost extremity" but if necessary should be drawn up so as to prevent France from assisting Hyder Ali's keeping possession of those territories belonging to the Nabob of Arcot which he has invaded.
