Paper of Observations (copy) enclosed in L 29/568/82/1 Ceding the islands of St. Pierre and Miqueton to France was for the purpose of providing shelter for the French fishermen. In ceding to France the Senegal River and its dependent area, Article 10 demands a parallel jurisdiction on the River Gambia for Great Britain. Britain will work in establishing the Gum Treaty in a manner satisfactory to both nations. Great Britain has accorded to France all that can be confirmed regarding commerce in India. The King is confident on all the repeated assurance of the Versailles court on the subject. His Majesty gives the liberty to run a ditch for carrying water through Chandermagore. British protection given to French commerce in Bengal ought to reassure France and make unnecessary any appearances of precautions which could only excite the fear of renewed troubles. There is a mutual desire to establish dignity and good faith amongst their allies.
